WHO WE ARE:
If you were born in South Africa it is most likely that you cut your teeth on a stick of biltong. This is certainly true of every one of the van Blommestein Family. It is in our blood, along with the sounds, smells, colors and vibrancy of South Africa. Understandable then that we would miss biltong, boerewors, and droewors so much. We have lived in the US for almost 15 years now and have found replacements for, or are used to living without most of the things we love, however, we were not able to live without our beloved meats.
So, we put our South African resourcefulness and creativity to work, dusted off the family recipe book, and got to work making our own biltong, boerewors and droëwors. What started off as a Saturday morning hobby between a father and his sons, quickly grew into something more. We subjected our friends and family to taste-testing (they certainly weren’t complaining) and after some small tweaking of the recipes, we ended up with the deliciousness that you can experience today. It is a family affair and everyone pitches in at some level of labor or love to get our meat into your belly. We are so glad you are visiting our website and would love for you to try our products. Biltong is a South African recipe snack that has zero sugar, is high in protein with delicious flavor, and has a texture combination that falls somewhere between jerky and prosciutto. The process is simple, yet delicate. We start with the finest cuts of beef and spice it to perfection using an old family recipe, we then marinate the slab of beef and air dry it for over fourteen days. We then carefully slice the slab into thin, tender bite-size pieces that have a naturally explosive flavor. Just like our South African ancestors, we use no artificial ingredients and only clean, natural spices. It’s perfect for a quick bite, meal replacement, or a post-workout snack. WHAT IS DROEWORS?
AIR-DRIED, BEEF STICK PROTEIN SNACKS
Droëwors is an artisanal dried beef stick that is made with 100% beef and contains no sugar. As with our Biltong, we start with the finest cuts of beef that are finely ground and spiced with only coriander, cloves, salt and pepper. The mix is then carefully stuffed into a natural casing and hung to dry for over five days. The result is a delicious, high protein treat that makes the perfect road trip or adventure snack that can be eaten anywhere.
WHAT IS BOEREWORS?
SOUTH AFRICAN SAUSAGE. FARMER’S SAUSAGE.
Boerewors is a traditional South African recipe sausage that is made of beef and pork. The word translates from Afrikaans into English as “Farmers’ Sausage”. Just like our ancestors, we use no artificial flavorings or preservatives and no fillers. Boerewors’ secret ingredient is coriander, which sets it apart from any other sausage and gives it the authentic South African taste. We also offer boerewors in Beef Only.
HOW IS BILTONG DIFFERENT FROM JERKY:
The most important difference between Biltong and jerky lies in the drying process. Making biltong is a two week-long process where the beef is air-dried without any heat, compared to jerky which uses a dehydrator. The Biltong also has a variety of all-natural ingredients which enhance the flavor and helps cure the meat.
Another unique difference between Biltong and jerky is the taste. Biltong, which isn’t smoked like traditional jerky, is made from the best cuts of beef while using traditional South African spices which give it a naturally flavorful taste.
The last difference between Biltong and jerky is the thickness of meat used when curing the meat. Biltong can be much thicker than jerky during the curing process making it take longer to make but giving it a much juicier taste.
HOW IS BILTONG MADE?
Slice and spice
Our biltong starts with the finest cuts of beef that are sliced into long strips and spiced with our not-so-secret blend of spices (void of anything artificial) and soaked in a vinegar based marinate.
Hang to Dry
The strips are removed from the marinate and hung to dry in an air-controlled room. Biltong will dry here for over fourteen days!
Slice and package
We now have Biltong! The whole strips of biltong are removed from the drying room and carefully sliced and packaged into convenient sizes.

Air-Drying our Biltong & Droewors leaves the beef enzymes intact, making them healthier than regular beef jerky. Typically beef jerky is soaked in sugar, molasses, and/or chemicals to help the beef appear and feel more tender. Our process leaves the beef naturally tender and we do not need to add any additional sugar or artificial ingredients. All of our products are perfect for the Paleo, Keto and Whole30 diets because we use only beef, vinegar, and a few natural spices. Grass-Fed Beef is lower in fat and has more omega-3 fatty acids.
